The Twentieth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt

Setnakhte founded the Twentieth Dynasty after the dust had settled following the power struggles between Merneptah's heirs.

Twentieth Dynasty
1189 BC — 1077 BC

After a period of civil war following the death of Queen Twosret at the end of the Nineteenth Dynasty, a certain Setnakhte emerged victorious, usurping the throne. Egypt under Setnakhte and his son Ramesses III faced the invasion of the Sea Peoples, but successfully defended itself while suffering irreparable damage that weakened the power of the king.

Power struggles within the royal family once again erupted, but this time the growing power of the priesthood and nobility added to the chaos. Egypt was also plagued by a series of droughts, which accelerated the decline, leading to the Third Intermediate Period.
